We want to maximize the amount of a graphic’s ink that is devoted to actually showing data

$$\text{Data-Ink Ratio}=\frac{\text{Data-ink}}{\text{Total ink used to print the graphic}}$$

Which is equal to 1.0 - proportion of a graphic that can be erased.
